Notes: Heero gets a mysterious email forward that makes him think twice.

Heero looked at the strange email address and decided to open it. There was no harm in looking. He clicked on the link and watched as the letter appeared.

Dear Heero,
This is a note from someone who cares, read it please and consider the words.
A Friend

> If I knew it would be the last time
> That I'd see you fall asleep,
> I would tuck you in tighter
> and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
> If I knew it would be the last time
> that I see you walk out the door,
> I would give you a hug and kiss
> and call you back for one more.
> If I knew it would be the last time
> I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
> I would video tape each action and word,
> so I could play them back day after day.
> If I knew it would be the last time,
> I could spare an extra minute or two
> to stop and say "I love you,"
> instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
> If I knew it would be the last time
> I would be there to share your day,
> well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
> so I can let just this one slip away.
> For surely there's always tomorrow
> to make up for an oversight,
> and we always get a second chance
> to make everything right.
> There will always be another day
> to say our "I love you's,"
> And certainly there's another chance
> to say our "Anything I can do's?"
> But just in case I might be wrong,
> and today is all I get,
> I'd like to say how much I love you
> and I hope we never forget.
> Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
> young or old alike,
> And today may be the last chance
> you get to hold your loved one tight.
> So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
> why not do it today?
> For if tomorrow never comes,
> you'll surely regret the day,
> That you didn't take that extra time
> for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
> and you were too busy to grant someone,
> what turned out to be their one last wish.
> So always hold them dear.
> Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
> "Please forgive me,"
> "Thank you," or "It's okay."
> And if tomorrow never comes,
> you'll have no regrets about today.

Heero stared at the screen for a little while. He blinked and then turned to look at the currently empty bed of his best friend, and secret crush, Duo. What if...he never got to tell Duo how he felt? What if the war took him away? It was so simple to loose somebody in these times. What if he had to live knowing he didn’t even open his mouth to say the words? If...What if?

Suddenly, Heero was distracted from his deep internal thoughts by the door of his bedroom exploding inward and smacking against the wall as the ever-exuberant Shinigami bound into the room.

“Hi Heero!” Duo waved as he carried a large shopping bag over to his bed and dumped it onto the already rumpled covers.

Heero watched as Duo went through his little bag of treasures. //What if he wasn’t here tomorrow?// Heero wondered.

Duo settled back onto the pillows to read a manga he had purchased (stole). He smiled as he slowly turned the pages. Heero watched silently. He turned back to his laptop and stared at the screen. “What if...” he murmured to himself.

“What if what?” Duo asked from across the room.

Heero turned in his chair and looked back at his friend. Duo laid the manga on his stomach and looked at Heero expectantly.

“What if I told you that I love you...” Heero said trailing off.

Duo blinked. He blinked again before getting up off the bed and walking over to Heero. Heero looked up from his seated position as Duo reached out and cupped his head in his hand. Heero reached out and pulled Duo into his lap and claimed his lips for the very first time.

As Duo pulled back to suck in air, he looked at Heero and smiled. “What if I told you that I love you back?”

Heero carefully untangled himself from Duo’s clinging limbs. Duo moaned softly as he snuggled against a pillow. Heero silently walked across the room to where his computer still lay open to the fateful email he’d received only hours earlier. He pressed the reply button and typed a swift reply.

Dear Friend,
I don’t know who you are or how you knew, but thank you.
Heero Yuy

As soon as the message was sent Heero shut down the computer and crept back to bed. He moved the offending pillow that Duo had glomped and positioned his lover in his arms, hugging him tightly. He kissed Duo on the forehead and whispered. “I love you.”

Regardless of all the ‘Ifs’ that hung in their future, he was going to hold onto what he had now. And if tomorrow never came, he would be all right with that.

The End!

That’s all she wrote.
